The ViewHull Review
Ironically this party palace and hook-up spot was once a divorce court. And in the battle of the sexes it seems men came up trumps at Barracuda as it's also a mecca for sports fans.
The Venue
Barracuda is massive, with an enormously high, patterned dome ceiling.
It was formerly Hull's divorce courts so it's witnessed a fair few acrimonious break-ups. But the South African pub chain, Barracuda, has since turned into a place where girls meet guys with the help of a few cocktails.
Mini skylights in the dark pink and cream ceiling keep it light and airy and the big, open area in the middle is only broken up by a few high tables and chairs.
The main seating area is in the sunken section at the front and is made up of semi-regimented, diner-style rows of padded benches. There are plenty of plasma screens here showing the sports and at the end of the long, long bar is a boxing machine.
A stage and a DJ booth sit on one side and Thursday nights guarantee a good dose of cheesy chart music, while Fridays is dedicated to R'n'B, and mainstream chart and dance is played on Saturdays.
The People
Lunch attracts a small local business crowd, although it’s not that busy, especially considering the capacity. It really comes into its own in the evening when a twenties and thirties crowd descend upon it.
It also gets packed out when there are big matches on as there’s a massive drop-down screen, so a view of the match is guaranteed.
The Food and Drink
You’ve got Strongbow, Fosters, Kronenbourg, Tetleys, Coors, Becks and John Smiths on draught, and in bottles there’s Budweiser, Bulmers, Salitos San Miguel, Holsten Pils, Peroni and South African beer Castle.
Wines range from £9.95 to £16.45 a bottle and include an Australian Chardonnay Penfold which is £4.95 for a large glass and £14.35 a bottle. Cocktails cost £3.50 each and pitchers are £8.50.
Food is served till 9pm and the menu is comprehensive and you can get hot melts, sandwiches, salads and wraps (a spicy chicken wrap is £4.95), as well as mains such as a mixed grill for £9.95 or a green Thai green curry for £6.65 which comes with rice. Desserts include a sticky toffee pudding for £2.75.
The Last Word
A popular place to come in the evening and get tanked up or watch sport in a spacious setting.
