Down at the wrong end of town, this Wetherspoons site pushes out cheap food and booze for the punters.

The Venue
Buffing up on its local history, JD Wetherspoon named this pub after one of the titles afforded to the city’s Lord Mayor.

Down near the end of Anlaby Street, this is an open-plan warehouse of a pub in true Wetherspoons' tradition. It has a stone tiled entrance and lots and lots of tables for public acts of consumption.

The predominant colours are turquoise and cream and, unlike other Wetherspoons, there aren’t that many plasma screens. There is, however, a sea of high and low tables and chairs and some sofas and they're all pretty much occupied at lunchtimes.

There’s a raised area on the right near the window with some comfy brown sofas and it’s fairly asymmetrical, with booths along both flanking walls to the right and left.

There’s a bright strip of lights running down the pillars which divide the almost fully enclosed alcove spaces, and there’s a big modern fireplace by the side of the booths too, and stainless-steel lights over the bar.

The People
It’s very busy here at lunchtime, after work and, to be honest, through most of the day. It’s the easiest and most obvious choice if you’re after cheap grub and a pint and, while women do come here, it seems that the concept of pubs as male bastions is very much alive.

The Food and Drink
On draught you’ve got Stella, Beck’s, Carling, Abbot Ale, Polish Plum, John Smith’s, Guinness, Strongbow Pedigree and Greene King IPA (£1.59 a pint).

In bottles there’s the usual list, plus Kozel, Efes, Lech and Tyskie, as well as Bulmer’s, Magners and Kopparberg. Also on tap is Fetzer wine, which is £2.10 for a small glass and just £7.39 a bottle.

You can glug back a Mojito or a Cosmopolitan for £2.99 and pitchers are £5.60 for Woo Woo or Blue Lagoon.

The menu is pretty comprehensive and cheap and includes baguettes, paninis and wraps (a chicken wrap is £3.49), alongside salads (a Thai noodle salad is £4.95) and hot meals. Pasta with meatballs is £5.95 and a Goan vegetable curry is £5.89. To finish, a treacle sponge with custard is £2.39.

The Last Word
A classic pile ‘em high establishment, this place doesn’t have any pretensions to be anything other than it is.
